Ruellia devosiana
Common names: Brazilian Wild Petunia, Monkey Flower, Trailing Velvet Plant
Ruellia devosiana is a beautiful tropical foliage plant with a soft, trailing habit and richly patterned leaves. The velvety green foliage is marked with pale silver-white veining, while the undersides glow with deep purple, making this plant attractive even when it is not in flower. Its delicate, petunia-like blooms are usually pale lavender to white and add a subtle, graceful accent to the plant’s already striking foliage.
This species is especially nice for larger tropical terrariums, vivariums, hanging baskets, mixed tropical planters, and shaded patio containers during the warmer months. It enjoys warmth, high humidity, bright indirect light, and evenly moist but well-drained soil. In terrariums, its trailing stems can be trimmed to keep the plant fuller and more compact. Avoid overly wet, stagnant conditions; good drainage and some airflow will help keep it looking its best.
In cooler climates, grow Ruellia devosiana as a houseplant or overwinter it indoors.
