Macodes petola — Lightning Jewel Orchid
Often considered the crown jewel of the jewel orchids, Macodes petola is nothing short of electric. Its velvety, deep green leaves are etched with brilliant, lightning-like veins that glow gold to neon green under the light—creating a striking, almost otherworldly effect. Few plants rival its ability to stop people in their tracks.
Native to the humid rainforests of Southeast Asia, this terrestrial orchid thrives in warm, consistently moist, high-humidity environments. Its compact, creeping growth habit makes it ideal for terrariums, vivariums, or a well-maintained plant cabinet where its luminous foliage can truly shine.
While it may produce small, delicate flowers on upright spikes, Macodes petola is celebrated almost entirely for its foliage—bold, radiant, and unforgettable.

A must-have for collectors and anyone drawn to the extraordinary, Macodes petola brings a vivid spark of living light to any plant collection.
Jewel Orchids are so named because of the stunning patterns and coloration of their dramatic foliage. Truly miniature in size, they are ideal candidates for even the smallest terrariums. Although they can be difficult to grow in exposed conditions, their culture is greatly simplified when enclosed in glass.
They enjoy warm temperatures and a humid atmosphere without frequent misting. They like consistent moisture but do want good drainage and aeration around the roots.
Size: The jewel orchids we offer here are single growth, young and small, potted in a 2" pot and have been hardened off after being propagated through tissue culture. Please do not expect to receive show quality plants. Growing them out to maturity is up to you and may prove to be challenging for many growers. We only offer these as rare or very uncommonly available which is indicative of their price and value. Remember, most of these jewels require the added humidity of a terrarium environment to thrive and may not acclimate to conditions outside of a terrarium without time and tender loving care.
