Frogging Tour? While our tours are somewhat focused on seeing exotic frogs of the rainforest, nature lovers will agree that our tours will satisfy a wide spectrum of interests within the realm of exotic flora and fauna. Plan to see Toucans, Parrots, Sloths, Monkeys, Reptiles & Amphibians, Countless Insects and if we’re lucky- Sea Turtles!

Day 1: Travel Day. Plan your trip to arrive on this day, (July12th) preferably during daylight hours. If you land early enough, you may have time to add a visit to a local zoo or butterfly park.
We stay at Pura Vida Hotel, a lovely stopover located just minutes away from the airport. There are 6 individual 2-6 person casitas among beautifully landscaped gardens. Breakfast included.

Day 2: After breakfast, we depart at 9am, and travel 2 hours to the Cloud forest and this night’s destination, the Trogon Lodge. At an altitude of 7000 ft above sea level, it is surrounded by the unspoiled ecology of the area. Note: High elevation means cooler temperatures (lows in the 40’s) and sometimes windier conditions. Combined with rain, you will want to dress for the cooler conditions. We should also have enough time for an afternoon hike to explore the trails and their exotic highland flora such as rare epiphytic ferns, gesneriads, begonias, peperomias, aroids, bromeliads, orchids, fuschias, etc.

Day 3: We start off our day with an early morning hike in search of the Resplendent Quetzal. This magnificent bird was revered by the Mayans and it’s feathers were used in their royalty’s elaborate headdresses. Shortly after breakfast, (included) we get back on the road with Palmar Norte and the Brunka Lodge as our nightly destination. Along the way, we visit the indigenous town of Boruca to support their economy by shopping for carved handcrafts.

Day 4: After breakfast (included), we set off with a long 5 hour drive today. La Leona Eco Lodge on the remote coastal area west of Corcovado National Park (includes 3 meals per day) Okay, I guess I have something else to share with you. We will be hiking the last 30 minutes (about 1 kilometer) down the beach to the Lodge. On the plus side, we will have our luggage (max. 30lbs. per person) will be transported by horse drawn cart. One more surprise - we sleep in tent cabins! This place is truly amazing adventure by itself so be sure to check it out online.

Day 5: Night hike, Day hike, nature watch, swim, snorkle, beach comb, relax, or explore!

Day 7: Early morning departure, the horse shuttle leaves at 7am! We head back to the Brunka Lodge for another night! On our way, we will take a side trip to see one of the local populations of Oophaga granulifera.

Day 8: We start our day with breakfast then drive down the road to visit another O. granulifera population. After having spent a couple hours photographing the frogs, we will head north, along the Pacific coast. If time permits, we may make an exploratory side trip to see if we can discover a new population. From here, we drive on to Manuel Antonio National Park. We will stay in Standard Cabins at Cabina Espadilla, just 200 meters from the park entrance and short walk to the beach. (Breakfast is included here)

Day 9: After breakfast, we take a morning hike into Manuel Antonio National Park. Afternoon is free time for swimming, snorkling, boogie boarding, or just relaxing. Optional tours such as sport fishing, canopy tour, horseback riding, can be arranged. The possibility of a night hike at Rain Maker if time allows will provide an opportunity to see some exciting rainforest species hidden during the day.

Day 10: Start our day with breakfast then drive back up the road to Rain Maker for a guided hike along their canopy bridges. Possibly locate the local O. granulifera population - greens! Afternoon is again free time.

Day 11: After our morning free time, we wind up our stay around noon. We depart and start heading northeast to Pura Vida Hotel where our adventure began. Along the way, we will stop to to see massive crocodiles in the river below a bridge. We arrive at Pura Vida that evening after having dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Day 12: Travel Day. Plan your departing flight on this day, (July 23rd) preferably during daylight hours. If you leave late enough, you may have time to add a visit to the local zoo or butterfly park.

NOTE: At some point during this trip, and as an added bonus, we will be joined by Brian Kubicki, founder of the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center, who will offer his herpetological expertise along with an unforgettable rainforest day (and night) hiking experience. Brian will join us for 2-3 days but the actual location he will be joining in is still yet to be determined. (You will be happy to know that we will be donating a portion of our proceeds to help support Brian’s goals with the CRARC.)

The small size of the group, consisting of only 14 guests, will allow for a much more personalized experience. The guides, each with their own area of expertise, will help to educate and enlighten you on the flora and fauna of the tropics. Although focused on the amphibian life, it is impossible to ignore the rest of the forest life. We will explore the amazing diversity of plants as well, including the multitudes of ferns, orchids, bromeliads, tropical trees and flowers. The result is a complete Natural History experience, allowing you to appreciate the ecosystem as a whole.

Prices are for Double Occupancy (possibility of up to Quad Occupancy). Price includes lodging, breakfast, ground travel, entrance fees, tours & guide fees.
Optional or unplanned tours that may become available are not included in the price.
Prices do not include tips, air fare or meals unless indicated.
You are welcome to skip any planned and prepaid activities but there are no refunds for any prepaid activity that you do not wish to take part in.
Some overnight stays are more rustic than others but all have hot showers. (Except Osa Tent Camp)
Our itinerary is subject to change based on travel, weather conditions, or unforseen circumstances.
We are sorry, however we may have little or no choices for people with specialized diets.
Everyone will be expected to carry their own luggage to their rooms etc. (Pack accordingly!)
